Curriculum

Introduction

The Faculty of Veterinary Science is one of the most important faculties of Kabul University. The faculty was established in 1973. Veterinary profession is not only important for providing animal health services but, also deals with public health, because many diseases are common among human and animals (zoonosis).

The faculty has an accepted curriculum recently revised on Outcome Based Education (OBE) for the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), and the enhancement of the faculty’s training facilities have resulted in certain corresponding changes in the faculty’s academic and organizational structure. The revised curriculum demand a more detailed and integrated teaching/training program and the introduction of new subjects into the study program, and it became organizational structure.

Accordingly, the faculty recently decided to have a new curriculum in consultation with the national local and an international requirement. The new curriculum will be applied for the academic years. At the new curriculum mostly focus is on veterinary medicine not veterinary science. There were of course, problem, as the earlier teaching program did not provide for all the courses envisaged in the old curriculum and there were great gaps in the subject content of some courses. Furthermore, lectures rectified these gaps to a major extent, but not completely.

The new curriculum for the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine has covered 2368 theoretical credit hours and 1904 practical credit hours that became totally, 4272 credit hours. Overall there is an almost 50:50 proportion of theory and practical and the distribution of lab and classroom hours is indicated for each course.

Overall, the new curriculum will reflect both the particular needs of Afghanistan with its large population of peasants and transhumant pastoralists, and the guideline of the 1978 FAO/WHO report on veterinary education, which defined a veterinarian as “a person with wide and comprehensive knowledge and experience of animals in health and disease, trained to apply that knowledge in the recognition, prophylaxis and treatment of animal disease, the improvement of animal production, the enhancement of animal welfare and the safeguarding of human health”

The revised curriculum is officially approved under protocol number 44 on 2017 of the faculty of veterinary science academic board and protocol number 2 on May 2018 of Kabul University Board. The curriculum covers preface from dean of the faculty, an introduction and brief description of faculty, details on teaching programs per each semester, brief definition of the faculty of veterinary science, present situation, organogram of the faculty, general instructional need assessment, vision, mission, instructional objectives, introduction of content, credits and code number of subjects, internship and field visits, ratio of theory and practice, teaching and learning methods, evaluation methods and finally introduction of syllabus of studies for each department.

Different subjects during five years of education at the faculty of veterinary science is organized and regulated based on the bay law of credit system of the Ministry of Higher Education which is divided into 4 groups; University based subjects (12%), basic subjects (30%), specialty subjects (50%), and monograph (8%). Accordingly, among the 4272 (100%) credit hours, 2368 (55.4%) is theory and 1904 (44.6%) credit hours is practical classes.
