Department of Pharmacognosy

Vision

To be a leading research-intensive and distinguished department in the field of pharmacognosy, phytotherapy, and botany and recognized nationally for its quality activity and contribution to national development.

Mission

The Dep. of the Pharmacognosy is dedicated to providing the following tasks:

  1. Training mission
  1. Training of students in general pharmacy based on international standards
  2. Improvement in the field of pharmacognosy synchronous with scientific development and progress
  3. Enhancing student’s knowledge through training in identification, processing, quality control and standardization of medicinal plants and their products.
  1. Research mission
  1. Qualitative enhancement of research in related subjects
  2. Conducting scientific research and trend to research-based activity
  1. Service mission
  1. Enhancing the place of medicinal plants in the health system of the country
  2. Providing laboratory services for chemical analysis, standardization and use of medicinal plant products.
  3. Advising and supporting policy-making bodies in the country in the fields of pharmacognosy, herbal medicine, and traditional medicine.

Students study the following subjects in this department:

  1. Botany- lecture, laboratory and field work
  2. Pharmacognosy- lecture, laboratory and field work
  3. Phytotherapy – lecture including mini-research/study work

Objectives

  1. Providing required high quality academic activities in pharmacognosy, phytotherapy, and botany
  2. Building the required knowledge and skills in identification, collection, post-harvesting treatment and standardization of medicinal plants and their products.
  3. Building the required knowledge and skills in rational use of herbal medicine.
  4. Study of natural resources of medicinal plants and their sustainable management in Afghanistan.
  5. Nurturing scientific research on medicinal plants and novel natural active substances.
