Department of the Theatre Program
Program Introduction
The Theatre Program was established in 1980 (1359 Solar Year) alongside other departments of the Faculty of Fine Arts. The primary objective of founding this program is to train young, educated professionals in the field of theatre. As one of the academic programs of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Kabul University, the Theatre Program benefiting from experienced and highly qualified instructors holding master's degrees provides contemporary youth with artistic knowledge and academic enrichment.
Students may enroll in the Theatre Program after successfully passing the Kankor Examination. They complete their studies over eight semesters equivalent to four academic years and receive a bachelor's degree issued in three languages.
Students of the Theatre Program may complete their bachelor's thesis in either a practical or theoretical format under the supervision of academic advisors and benefit from the academic privileges of the bachelor’s level.
According to the curriculum approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, students study a set of courses designed to prepare them for valuable employment opportunities upon graduation.
Graduates of this program can work in various artistic and cultural sectors, including the Ministry of Information and Culture, the National Theatre Directorate, Afghan Film Directorate, public and private production companies, and Afghanistan’s visual and audio media institutions. Through these positions, they may serve society and earn their livelihood.
Furthermore, the Theatre Program is able to establish bilateral cooperation agreements with national and international institutions, through which those institutions may provide continuous moral and material support to the program.

The Bachelor of Theatre Program, with an emphasis on Islamic values, presents theatre art as a medium for promoting human, social, and ethical values. It highlights the significance of using theatre as a tool for education, inspiration, and positive influence on communities and cultures.
The Mission of the Theatre Program
The Bachelor of Theatre Program, with a mission to enhance human and social values through the education and promotion of theatre art, aims to foster social cohesion, strengthen cultural identity, reinforce human communication, and train young artistic talents within the Islamic community. Grounded in Islamic ethical and human-centered values, this program contributes to the enrichment of culture and the advancement of societal values, serving as an effective tool for cultural and social development.
Educational Objectives of the Theatre Program
The Theatre Program has been established to preserve the national and historical values of the country and strives to serve the enhancement of the academic level of youth in light of Islamic teachings and the policies of the Islamic Emirate. In addition, it pursues the following objectives:
- Familiarizing students with the fundamental concepts and practical skills of theatre art.
- Training the young generation as committed, skilled, and research-oriented professionals who can contribute to the enrichment of human knowledge and succeed as proficient theatre artists capable of improving the production of artistic works such as theatrical performances, acting in films, and other artistic fields.
- Ensuring students gain comprehensive knowledge of the country’s literary, artistic, cultural, promotional, and historical resources in order to protect and preserve them against foreign cultural and ideological influences.
- Introducing students to contemporary, standardized methods and works of theatre art at the national and regional levels.
- Conducting research, authoring, and translating books related to the program.
- Striving to train professional cadres capable of reflecting social problems, shortcomings, and cultural issues through theatre art.
- Collaborating and engaging with national and international institutions related to artistic and cultural affairs, especially in Islamic countries.

- Preserving Islamic, artistic, cultural, and national values.
- Recognizing theatre art as a common language among various nations, which remains one of the essential and widely accepted arts in the world today.
- Acknowledging that theatre art in Afghanistan has a historical background and valuable achievements, and continues to be a necessary and important cultural and social need in contemporary Afghan society.
Summary of the Periodic Review Outcome of the Theatre Program
The Theatre Program underwent a periodic review in the year 2024 (1403 Solar Year). Based on the remarks of the respected review panel, the necessary structural and content improvements were implemented. In accordance with official letter No. (411), dated 23/10/1403, issued by the Quality Enhancement Directorate, the continuation of the Theatre Program has been recommended.
