Department of Social Work
Afghanistan, A country with experience of more than 3 decades war and anarchy had high need for social change, reform, and confirmative action. Hence, Social work department has been established in the faculty of psychology And Education Sciences, in Kabul University, for the particular objectives to full the needs and demand of the market and society.
Social work is an academic discipline and profession that concerns itself with individuals, families, groups and communities in an effort to enhance social functioning and overall well-being. Social functioning refers to the way in which people perform their social roles, and the structural institutions that are provided to sustain them.
The department of Social work has been established for the first time in Afghanistan at Kabul University in 2014, in order to provide under graduate level services for the vulnerable Afghan Society to develop intervention techniques and knowledge at university level to solve social and personal problems and create social changes. Social work practice is often divided into micro-work, which involves working directly with individuals or small groups; and macro-work, which involves working with communities, and within social policy, to create change on a larger scale.
The Department of Social Work will advance social, environmental, and economic justice, promote equity and equality, alleviate oppression, and enhance human health and well-being across Afghanistan, Region according to global community systems.

Mission
The Mission of the Department is to educate, enlighten, and empower the students of social work towards self-development and professional competence to face challenges and provide need-based services to the community. Therefore, Social Work provides exemplary education, applied research, field work practice and transformative outreach toward the accomplishment of our Vision.
Social Work Department Educational Objectives
The Department aims to prepare students to integrate knowledge, skills, and values into practice by fulfilling the following goals.
- To assist students to development understanding and integration of social work theories and practice.
- To enable students to enhance professional social work values and ethics.
- To assist students to apply systems concepts to practice across the micro and macro continuum.
- To empower Students to demonstrate constructive critical thinking skills.
- To allow students to demonstrate an understanding of social work concepts and the planned changed process based in systems theory.
- To provide opportunities for students to serve in social work settings.
- To develop the ability of students to communicate effectively and professionally in oral and written formats.
- To assist students with their professional development and professional identity.
- To help students to develop and understanding of working with people of diversity; including age, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation without discrimination.
- To assist students with an understanding of working toward social justice and advocacy.
- To expose students to the history, current realities, and future implications of social welfare system with regard to the local and global continuum.
- To integrate Islamic beliefs and values with professional social work values and ethics as set forth in the code of ethics.

The duration of course for the study for BA degree in the field of Social work faculty of psychology and Educational Sciences as the guidance of the Minister of Higher Education, is for 4 years in 8 semesters. The educational system is credit based and the length of each semester is 16 weeks with 50 minutes of time allocated for each teaching hours.
