Department of Pashto Language and Literature

Introduction

The Pashto Department was established in 1323 (1944) with the founding of the Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences. The Department of Pashto Language and Literature has been operating within the framework of the Faculty of Languages and Literature for more than six decades. To date, this department has provided society with well-trained cadres in various fields such as science, culture, literature, and language skills.

In 1323 (1944), the departments of Dari and Pashto languages were jointly organized within the Faculty of Languages and Literature at Kabul University. This arrangement continued for twelve years, and finally, in 1335 (1956), with the expansion of the faculty, the independent departments of “Pashto Language and Literature” and “Dari Language and Literature” were established.

Since 1335 (1956), the Department of Pashto Language and Literature has carried out effective activities aimed at the development and enrichment of the Pashto language and literature and the training of specialized and professional cadres. The department also regularly publishes the Wazhma Scientific Research Journal, which is currently known as the Wazhma Scientific-Research Journal, in order to preserve and promote literature and culture.

At present, the Department of Pashto Language and Literature offers three separate academic programs—Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral—through which it provides society with lecturers, writers, researchers, and translators who serve in various public and private sectors such as radio, television, press, publishing, universities, schools, and other institutions.
