The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences was established in 1962 at Kabul University under the name Faculty of Education. The faculty began its academic activities with the admission of 60 students and the collaboration of 10 experienced national and international faculty members, particularly American professors holding doctoral and master’s degrees in various disciplines. The primary objective of establishing the faculty at that time was to train professional teachers for secondary education in fields required by the country’s school system. In addition, a department entitled Educational Administration also existed within the faculty structure, which was later renamed the Department of Vocational Education. In 1979, the structure and objectives of the faculty were reviewed, and its educational and research activities continued through two departments: Psychology and Pedagogy. In response to scientific developments and emerging societal needs, the faculty’s goals and curriculum were revised in 2003. Based on these revised objectives, the faculty was officially renamed the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. Following these changes and in line with addressing the educational and social needs of the country, the Department of Educational Management was established in 2003, the Department of Counseling Psychology in 2013, and the Departments of Social Work and Educational Planning and Policy in 2014. Currently, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences comprises six active departments.

The academic staff of the faculty have consistently worked toward the establishment of master’s and doctoral-level programs, taking into consideration the fundamental needs of the country. These efforts have resulted in the successful implementation of master’s degree programs in Educational Management, Psychology, and Educational Planning and Policy.

Overall, in light of scientific advancements, societal demands, and in alignment with the strategic plan of the Ministry of Higher Education, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences strives to further develop and strengthen its educational and research programs while preparing competent, skilled, and committed professionals to serve the community.
