About the Faculty
Understanding of the past and present cultural and literary values of our country, knowledge of its brilliant culture and literature, and its transfer to future centuries, in 1320s, struck in mind the idea of creating and establishing a faculty of languages and Literature. According to this idea, in 1323, the Faculty of Literature and Humanities was established in Kabul University, which has taken firm steps to introduce the history of literature and culture of our country. Following the establishment of the medicine, law and science faculties, the Faculty of Literature and Humanities was the fourth faculty that was established in the framework of Kabul University. The goal of establishing this faculty was to understand about the past and present cultural and literary values of the country, knowledge of its brilliant culture and literature and its transfer to the future generations, so through researches and education, they will be able to introduce this phenomena to the people of the world.
After 1340s, several departments of foreign languages such as (German, French, English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian) were established within the framework of this faculty. Also, over a period of several years, the fields of journalism, social sciences, psychology, and fine arts, respectively, separated from the faculty of literature and humanities and began to operate as independent and self-sustaining faculties. Thus, the Faculty of Literature and Humanities was renamed as the Faculty of Languages and Literature.
In 2014, the Faculty of Languages and Literature was branched off into two separate faculties (national languages and literature and foreign languages and literature). At the time being, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature has eight departments (English Language and Literature Department, French Language and Literature Department, Russian Language and Literature Department, German Language and Literature Department, Arabic Language and Literature Department, Spanish Language and Literature Department, Turkish Language and Literature Department and Chinese Language and Literature Department). The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature also offers M.A degree in Arabic Language and Literature.
